Every day: the sale is paid and the invoice goes out at once

At the counter, issue a fatura‑recibo: it records the sale and the payment in one document. For sales to private customers up to 1,000 €, a simplified invoice also works. Print on A4 or on an 80 or 58 mm roll.

The customer pays contactless on your phone or scans a QR code, with no terminal to buy or rent. Each payment has a fee, which depends on the plan.

Stock: FIZ imports your purchase invoices

When you buy stock for the shop with your NIF, the supplier’s invoice shows up in the AT’s e‑Fatura. FIZ fetches it by itself and suggests whether the expense is business, personal or mixed.

Frequently asked questions about shops and retail

What is the CAE code for a shop?

It depends on what you sell. In CAE-Rev.4, in force since 2025, clothing uses 47711, newspapers, magazines and stationery 47621, and shops selling varied goods, mainly not food, 47122.

In CAE-Rev.3, clothing and stationery were 47711 and 47620. Selling online has its own codes.

What IVA rate applies in a shop?

23% on most products, in mainland Portugal. Some have a reduced rate: for example, books, newspapers and magazines are at 6%, but notebooks are not. Each invoice line carries its own rate.

If you invoiced up to 15,000 € last year, or expect no more than that in the year you start, you can invoice without IVA. Once you pass 18,750 € in the current year, you charge IVA from that moment.

Do I need to issue an invoice for every sale?

Yes, for every sale, even if the customer does not ask. If the customer gives their NIF, FIZ adds it to the invoice; otherwise the invoice goes to «Consumidor final». When the customer pays at once, the fatura‑recibo records both the sale and the payment.

A simplified invoice can be used for sales to private customers of up to 1,000 €; with the IVA exemption, with no limit.

What if a customer returns an item?

Issue a credit note against the invoice, for the full amount or only for the returned items. The refund is separate: if the customer paid by card through FIZ, you can refund them in FIZ.

Self-employed retailer: which IRS coefficient applies?

In the simplified regime, sales of goods have the coefficient 0.15: 15% of what you sell counts as income. With 36,000 € in sales, IRS is worked out on 5,400 €.

FIZ automatically includes the invoices you issue in Anexo B of the IRS declaration.

How is Seg. Social worked out for a self-employed retailer?

Under the simplified regime, Seg. Social counts 20% of sales, without IVA, and the monthly contribution base is a third of that quarterly amount. The rate is 21.4%, or 25.2% if you declare to Seg. Social that you are an empresário em nome individual with only commercial or industrial activity. If you work as self-employed for the first time, you pay no contributions for 12 months.

FIZ calculates the contribution from your invoices, prepares the quarterly declaration and submits it with one click from you.

Contributions Code, art. 162 (Opens in a new window)art. 168 (Opens in a new window)

Can I issue transport documents?

Yes. FIZ issues transport, delivery, return, consignment and own-asset movement notes. For example, a delivery note goes with goods delivered to a customer, and a return note with goods going back to the supplier.

What changes when the shop is a company?

The CAE, IVA and invoice rules stay the same. The company pays IRC on profit and keeps full accounting (contabilidade organizada) with a certified accountant.

IRC is filed in the Modelo 22 by the end of May. Under the simplified regime, with turnover up to 200,000 € and the other legal conditions, it is worked out on 4% of sales.

In FIZ, the company’s certified accountant confirms the IVA declaration with one click and FIZ submits it to the AT.
